Cappings & Cornice

Cappings and cornice are usually covered using pieces of code 5 lead connected together using welts that are interlocked together.

Chimney Refurbishment

A chimney’s leadwork usually consists of code 5 lead in the form of a front apron, two side flashings and a back gutter.  These commonly fail over time because of poor installation.

Dormer Windows

Dormer windows are commonly covered in code 5 lead in many different ways. Front aprons, side jambs, head jambs and side cheeks are the most common.

Hips & Ridge

Hips and ridge are generally covered in code 5. A piece of lead is formed around a wood roll to form a watertight seal where two roofs meet.

Lead Roof Installation

Lead roofs are one of the best ways you can waterproof your roof when installed correctly. These roofs can last for more than 100 years.

Either wood roll or hollow roll are the two details for a lead roof and can range from code 5 to code 8 generally.

Hollow roll is the more traditional method and wood roll is used on most modern projects.

Window Bays

Window bays and hoods are generally covered in code 5 lead in many different ways including welts to wood roll details to internal gutters.

Ely Cathedral, England

Ely’s Cathedral with its famous octagon tower was great project to be involved with.

Symmetry Lead Work were selected to install the sandcast lead roof to the south aisle roof. Of which was 300 square metres of wood roll code 8 roof area, 60 metres of code 9 gutters with two new stacks of code 8 rainwater pipes and hoppers and with various flashing details.

Sorø Church, Denmark

We began by stripping the incorrectly laid lead sheet that was installed in 1969, and installed 90 tonnes of new sandcast lead.

We undertook this project at one of Denmark’s oldest and most prestigious churches. Soro church is the third longest and the fifth largest medieval church in the country. Built between 1160-80, it is one of the first brick buildings in Denmark

A hollow roll detail was chosen; this is a traditional method used on heritage buildings throughout the UK, particularly on steep pitches. The majority of these roofs are 50 degrees with a 10 metre rafter length.
It’s tough working from ladders installing 65kg code 7 sheets into place. But three of us completed this large lead roofing project in under 6 months on site!

There was 1350 square metres of roof area covered with over 1000 65kg roof sheets. There were various other details including ridge, flashings, valleys and ventilation

It was a great experience which was very challenging. I would like to thank everyone that was involved in the project for giving us the opportunity to showcase our skills, and show what is possible in a tight program with the right people involved

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris

It is with great pleasure and immense pride to announce that I have been working on the roof at the world famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. Being invited to take part in the restoration of this imposing monument is a true highlight of my career in leadwork, and a huge privilege knowing it will be there for centuries to come.

This is not Symmetry’s first project in Europe, and excelling our skills and learning new techniques in other countries is a truly rewarding experience. Sharing knowledge between countries is so important and will benefit everybody in the future regarding the fantastic material we love so much- LEAD (Pb)!

This is a once in a lifetime experience that will be never be forgotten.
